When it comes to IELTS, a lot of questions come to mind. While all the answers can be easily found on the British Council website, it isn’t always that easy to comprehend the answers. IELTS test is easy. There is absolutely nothing intimidating about it. However, it is important to know the answers to your questions before you take IELTS.

How can I prepare for an IELTS exam?

Preparing for the IELTS exam is very easy. It can take at least a week or 10 days. Before you head on to plan for your schedule, you must first understand what exactly should you expect. Remember that IELTS is all about testing your English language skills. Now, to get a good score on your IELTS, you have to know how to speak, write, and read the English language. To practice effectively, the preparation for IELTS can be broken down into several components:

1. Practice for writing test by practice writing dialogues, stories, and your ideas. Workout on listening test by watching English movies or videos. Speak as much as you can with friends and family to improve your skills for speaking test.

2. Once done with listening, reading, writing, and speaking, you must familiarise yourself with the test format. Details regarding the IELTS score, test date, and centre are provided on the British Council website. Note to self, don’t believe in rumours. Just prepare yourself and follow the instructions.

3. Do make sure to know the type of IELTS you have opted. There are two types: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The former is for students going for higher education. The latter is for secondary education, work purposes, and other reasons.

4. Do make sure to take practice tests. They allow you to familiarise yourself with the IELTS test. Practice tests make sure you are well prepared for the IELTS test. 

5. Finally, be optimistic about yourself. You have prepared well and are very likely to perform great!

What are the documents required for the IELTS exam?

You won’t need to carry a lot of documents on the test day. All you need to bring is your passport or the identity card. Do make sure that the ID or the passport you provide matches the information on IELTS application.

What does the IELTS test consist?

IELTS examines the basics of the English language. The test includes Listening, Writing, Reading, and Speaking.

First comes the listening test. The test takes half an hour. You’ll be listening to a monologue or a conversation. All you have to do is answer the questions.

The second test includes reading. This test can take an hour and comprises of 40 questions. The test will consist of a news report, a magazine excerpt, just about anything from an authentic source. The reading material will be such that anyone regardless of their qualification will be able to read and comprehend it.

The third is the writing test. First, you’ll have to summarise a given diagram, chart, or a figure. Then, you’ll be asked to write an essay in the second part of the test.

Finally comes the speaking test. Here you’ll be offered three different tasks.  First, about yourself which will take 4-5 minutes. Second, you’ll be given a topic and talk about it. That will only take a minute. The last task will be of questions related to your topic. You’ll have to answer the questions offered by the test takers.

How long is the validity of the IELTS test?

The IELTS test score can be valid for 36 months from the time you took the test. There are no restrictions and it doesn’t matter what of the world you are from. The test validity for all the citizens in the world remains 36 months starting from the day you took the test.

What is an IELTS score?

IELTS score can vary from 0 to 9. The IELTS score is, in fact, an average of all the band scores you take. The maximum band any test can offer is 9, while the lowest depends on the test. The lowest you can get on the listening test is 4, and 2.5 for both reading in both Academic and General Training. The band scores depend on the number of correct answers you provide. 

The band score is also a measure of your grip on the language. 9 band score in any test shows you have got the complete command of English. 8 shows a good understanding but a margin of relatively rare errors. 7 shows good grip with very few errors but likely to have frequent inaccuracies. 6 shows a somewhat good grip but with frequent errors. 5 allows the basic understanding of the language but not familiar with complex situations.

How many times can you take the IELTS test?

There is no limit. You can take the test as much as you like to improve yourself. You are more than welcome to apply as much as you like. In order to achieve the correct IELTS score, you can try for as long as possible. It is, however, recommended that you take practice tests so that you don’t have to give the test so much.
