Subject pronouns and grammar
As the main subject
-
I teach English online.
-
They play basketball after school.
With compound subjects
-
Sarah and I are studying together.

You and he make a good team.
As predicate nominatives (after the verb to be)
-
It was I who called yesterday. (formal)
-
It’s me who called yesterday. (informal, common in spoken English)
In questions
-
Can she come to the meeting?
-
When will we start the project?
In adjective clauses
-
The student who studies the hardest usually gets the best grades.
Subject pronouns & verb agreement
The verb must agree with the subject pronoun:
-
I play piano.
-
He / She / It plays piano.
-
We / You / They play piano.
Notice that only he, she, and it take the -s ending in the present simple tense.
Common ESL mistakes with subject pronouns
WRONG: Me like pizza.
CORRECT: I like pizza.
WRONG: Her is my teacher.
CORRECT: She is my teacher.
WRONG: My brother he lives in Canada.
CORRECT: My brother lives in Canada.
