Past Simple

The Past Simple tense is used to talk about actions that happened and finished in the past. It is often used with time words like yesterday, last week, or two days ago.

Exercises

Structure

  • Regular verbs - verb + -ed (work - worked, play - played).

  • Irregular verbs - use second form (go - went, write - wrote).

  • The form is the same for all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).

Affirmative

  • I worked yesterday.

  • She visited her grandma last weekend.

  • They watched a movie two days ago.

  • He wrote a letter last night.

Negative

Use did not (didn’t) + base verb.

  • I didn’t work yesterday.

  • He didn’t eat breakfast.

  • They didn’t travel last summer.

With to be (was/were):

  • She wasn’t at school yesterday.

  • We weren’t late for the meeting.

Questions

Use Did + subject + base verb.

  • Did you work yesterday?

  • Did she call her friend?

  • Did they walk to the park?

With to be (was/were):

  • Was he happy?

  • Were you at home last night?

  • I was tired yesterday.

  • You were at the party.

  • He wasn’t busy.

  • Were they in class last Monday?

When do we use Past Simple?

Finished actions in the past

  • I visited Rome last year.

  • She watched TV yesterday.

Past facts or states

  • He was a famous singer.

  • The shop was open on Sunday.

Actions that cannot happen again

  • My grandfather fought in World War II.

  • She met the president in 2015.

Sequence of past actions

  • I woke up, made coffee, and left the house.

  • She opened the window, looked outside, and smiled.

Time expressions with Past Simple

  • yesterday
    last night / last week / last year

  • two days ago / three years ago

  • in 2005 / in June

  • at 6 o’clock

  • the other day

Examples:

  • I studied English yesterday.

  • They moved to London three years ago.

  • He started his new job last week.
